MPI’s journey to net zero: five years to reach our target!
At MPI, sustainability is now a core part of our strategy, embedded in everything we do. But of course, like any company trading for as long as MPI has, 63 years and counting, the depth of our commitment to sustainability has grown over time. From basic environmental policies and compliance measures to being well on track to hit our net zero target, we have been on a journey, a journey of continuous improvement and responsibility.
Of course, sustainability goes beyond environmental factors like net zero, and we remain committed to community, social responsibility, and ethical business practices. But today, we want to celebrate how far we have come on the journey to net zero and share our plans to hit our target.
Where we started
Our journey to net zero began in 2019 when our leadership team recognised the importance of taking meaningful action to reduce emissions. While MPI has always had a relatively low environmental impact, we believe that every business has a global responsibility to minimise its footprint.
To set a realistic target year, we first needed a clear framework for environmental management. This required dedicated leadership, a thorough assessment of our emissions, and the creation of actionable initiatives. Fortunately, our director, Adam Webb, stepped forward to take the lead.
The first step was a comprehensive assessment of our emissions, including a system-wide gap analysis to establish a baseline and identify areas for improvement. By gathering data from across the business, we measured our total carbon footprint—accounting for direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions (Scope 2), and business travel (Scope 3)—which amounted to 77.06 tCO₂e.
Armed with this data and a clear strategy, we set an ambitious net zero target: 2030.
Our journey to date
Here is a visual summary of our achievements to date.

Where we stand now
The image above makes a pretty picture and illustrates some of the fantastic decisions and achievements we have made over the last 5 years. We have Gold Level from Supply Chain Sustainability School, 100% renewable energy supply and of course our ISO14001 certification. These are just a few of the standout steps we have made to date.
Over the past year, we have continued to drive meaningful change across our operations. Our energy efficiency initiatives have resulted in significant improvements, with 46.53% of head office energy now self-generated through solar power. Additionally, we are ensuring that 100% of purchased electricity comes from renewable sources.
Waste reduction has been another key achievement. In 2024, we saw a 43.75% decrease in total waste, with 100% of waste diverted from landfill. Our efforts in reducing paper consumption have also yielded impressive results, with 82.41% less paper used compared to when our environmental management system was first introduced. Additionally, the paper we have purchased has come from sustainable sources.
Beyond these improvements, our commitment to biodiversity and conservation has remained strong. We continue to offset our residual carbon emissions by planting native trees, while also supporting global reforestation initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cambodia.

As the graph above illustrates we are on target to reach our target, having already reduced 65.4% of residual carbon since our baseline but we recognise that the hardest work is still to come.
So what comes next?
With half a decade left to achieve our net zero target, we are entering the most challenging phase of our carbon journey.
Having already completed the more straightforward reductions, the remaining cuts will be increasingly complex and more demanding. However, we are confident that our roadmap will lead us to success by continuing to work together, innovate, collaborate, and push boundaries. We can deliver lasting sustainability that benefits both our business and the world around us.
Together, we are making a difference—and we are just getting started.
